Yesterday it was quietly announced that former One Direction singer come supermodel boyfriend, Zayn Malik, is going to release a collaboration with Versace secondary line, Versus. While Malik has always looked very stylish on the arm of girlfriend Gigi Hadid as well as on stage, the news of the pairing comes as a bit of a surprise. Malik says, “I think Versus has always been a very cool brand. It’s a great brand for me and for people in my generation. I’ve always wanted to design clothes, and there’s no brand I’d rather design for than Versus. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire. I know we’ll create something amazing.”
While I'm sure Donatella would not allow anything to be released that was less than impeccable, I do fear this collaboration could simply mimic the favored "elevated basics" style that Instagramers tend to adore. Designer collabs with of-the-moments stars haven't always been a success. Remember the debacle that was Lindsay Lohan for Emanuel Ungaro? One would hope the Versace team would take note of the success of Fenty x Puma in their product development and marketing, although this collaboration will probably stand at a much higher price point. Guess we'll have to wait till May to find out.
