It was confirmed today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art that the 2017 Costume Institute exhibit and gala is to honor Commes des Garcons' Rei Kawakubo. This will be the first living honoree since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. Kawakubo who has been pushing fashion's boundaries since 1969 with the launch of Commes Des Garcons and "is one of the most important and influencial designers of the past forty years," says exhibit curator Andrew Bolton. The exhibit will feature over 100 looks from the CDG archives including pieces from the designers first runway show in 1981. This years gala chairs include Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour with Kawakubo serving as honorary chair.
